Kyusyu Debate Open

History

Our tournament was hold in 2014 for the first time.

It was designed to be an event that would improve ''access'' to join a tournament for debaters in Kyushu area - which is geographically isolated from debating community in other area in Japan - as well as attracting debaters and adjudicators not only in Japan but also from all over the world to come to Fukuoka which is one of the hottest, exciting and growing cities in Asia.

We also successfully hold Kyushu Cup 2015 and Kyushu Cup 2016.

In 2017, after a heated discussion, we finally changed the name from 'Kyushu Cup' to 'Kyushu Debate Open' for several reasons.
Firstly, we had several questionnaires, it seems that Kyushu Debate Open is the most popular one in both domestic and international communities.
Secondly, we use open instead of cup to express our passion to welcome all debaters from all countries.

Thirdly, we did many searches to find that even though there are some international debate tournament called cup’, the major tendency is to use the words like open, tournament or championship.

We are very sorry for people who prefer to Kyushu Cup and wrote their individual comment in our questionnaire, we want to say that your valuable feedback helped us a lot and hope you will support our tournament as much as past days.

Concept

Kyushu Debate Open, also called QDO’, is an annual competition held at Ito campus of Kyushu University, open for both domestic and international debating societies, in British Parliamentary format.

Our main purpose is to provide an opportunity for debaters to improve their logical thinking ability, English ability and communication ability through competition. This also contributes to cultivating skills for those who can become "global citizens" in the future.

As the oldest international BP style debate tournament in Japan, we also play a role to provide Japanese debaters an opportunity to take part in and learn from an international tournament through the communication with oversea debaters. We invite a couple of famous oversea debater as our AC and give us a lecture to make sure every participant can learn something from our tournament and improve their debating skills.

Our tournament also plays a vital role in Kyushu Area, including Kyushu University. We provide participants a lot of attractive information about Fukuoka to let them know more about this lovely city. In addition, the organizing committee also want to improve our tournament with the cooperation from Kyushu University this year.

Goal

Our tournament was first organized in 2014 with 43 participants, with 3 from overseas. This number has grown to 112 participants, including 27 oversea participators in mere 2 years.

This year, we want to attract more than 150 participants, including 50 oversea participants.
